The Wardrobe has had a long and fascinating history. From its inception in the late 1970s with a stock of Royal Opera House costumes, it has grown to become Hampshire’s leading theatrical costume hire service, offering premium quality costumes at affordable prices.
Initially a resources for schools and drama groups, in 2007 we opened our doors to the general public and haven’t looked back since!
We offer an eclectic mix of historical reproductions, original vintage and theatrical costumes for all kinds of productions, special events and parties.
We are a small but dedicated team with a passion for history, costume and the performing arts.
Emily has been Supervisor at Hampshire Wardrobe since 2014. She completed a Theatre and performance design degree in 2009 specialising in costume, and has worked professionally in the industry as a costume supervisor. Emily enjoys working with theatre designers to create a unique look for their production, and has an excellent eye for detail.
Alexandra joined the Hampshire Wardrobe team in 2008 as Wardrobe Assistant, and in 2011 became Assistant Supervisor. Having trained as an archaeologist, in 2013 she completed her doctorate on the role of object handling with museum collections. Her love of history and archaeology plays a big part in her role, and as co-ordinator of our educational loans boxes, she offers customers expert advice on how to bring history to life in the classroom.
We are very lucky to have a wonderful team of volunteers who give up their free time to assist us with costume repairs, alterations, and carry out behind the scenes costume care and maintenance. Many of our volunteers also work towards creating new costumes for our collection.
