Saturday October 14th 2017

Paris: Art, Architecture and Romantic history: Mike Grundy

10.30 am until 3.30 pm Cost £24.00

This course is a journey of discovery through the history, art and architecture of Paris, a city renowned throughout the world as the city of love, the city of light and, above all, the city of style. The last 300 years have seen a series of dramatic and often traumatic passages in the lives of Parisians, their royal, military and political figures, and their cultural icons. The course starts with an overview of this history, setting the context for the changing cultural scene of France in the fields of art and architecture. Examples of the topics to be covered here include the age of the Impressionists, the Beaux Arts architectural style of the Belle Epoque, and the Art Nouveau. As an essential part of this review, students are taken on a virtual study tour of the famous Metro stations of Paris, whose "galleries of art" reveal the topics and images that Parisians themselves see as pivotal to their city. The platform walls portray key historical events

and commemorate many of the leading figures that have shaped Paris and contributed to its rich cultural heritage. Mike Grundy is a Londoner who has lived or worked in many parts of the capital over his career to date. His areas of expertise centre on the architecture, art, Underground systems and history of London, and he has recently developed his studies and field of teaching to cover these same topics for a number of other European capital cities. His courses use the art and architecture of the Underground and the metro rail networks as a reference framework for exploring these cities.
