Local Studies area

Local Studies

We have a wide variety of information on the history of the Alton area drawn from our extensive collection of local material built up over the past 150 years. You can use the Local Studies area for private research, school projects or simply for general interest. It is arranged in topic drawers, each containing a selection of press-cuttings or extracts from published articles.

There is also a selection of reference material, including copies of local trade directories and bill heads from local traders. Parish records and census information are available on microfiche. The photographic collection is represented by four published books of local material. Copies of photographs in the collection can be made on request.

If you are researching something in particular, it is always best to enquire in advance to check that there is a relevant file.

How can I use the Local Studies Area?

The Local Studies material is on the ground floor of the Museum as part of the public displays. There is a desk and a microfiche reader. If you cannot find what you are looking for please ask a Museum Assistant as there may be material available elsewhere.

If you need to make notes, please bring pencil and paper with you. Ink pens or ballpoints are not allowed to be used in the Local Studies area. Although we are unable to lend material, we can make photocopies of most items on request, and subject to copyright restrictions, for research and private study purposes.
