Crowley Family

The Crowley family were related to William Curtis who founded the Curtis Museum, Alton. They also donated money towards the purchase of premises in Market Street, the original site of the museum. Philip Crowley (1837-1900), a nephew of the founder of the Curtis Museum, was an avid collector and accumulated an enormous collection, the choice of which were bequeathed to the Natural History Museum.

He also bequeathed cases of birds the Curtis Museum. His brother, Frederick (1825-1910) also supported the museum over the years.

There are 113 bird specimens collected or donated to the Curtis Museum in the Hampshire County Council collections.
